“You famously said George Bush doesn’t care about Black people. It makes me wonder what makes you think Donald Trump does, or any people at all?” -- Jimmy Kimmel (2018)
Kanye West has affected us all, in one way or another.
Whether it be incidents such as interrupting Taylor Swift during the 2009 VMA's or the infamous 'slavery is a choice' controversy, Kanye has always been at the center of the media spotlight, often for the worse. However, Kanye is much more than just a crazy celebrity.
This class aims to investigate his impact on artistry and culture through the lenses of his albums, fashion endeavors, personal life, relationship with the media, and much more -- and why it matters.
Through slide deck lectures, class discussions, debates, group activities, creative and written projects, and lyrical & thematic analysis of multi-media including music videos, interviews, and short films, we hope to provide an engaging learning environment while fostering a fun and safe space.
Whether you're a hardcore fan, a hater, or don't know much about Kanye -- there's always something new and rewarding for everyone. We encourage everyone to apply -- we love having classrooms of diverse Kanye backgrounds (not just fans), and we mainly look for clear passion in wanting to take this class on your applications!
