In this introductory lecture, we will explore the ins and outs of the pen, paint, and ink-washed world of New Yorker cartoons, from their first days to the modern era, examining both the technical and the cultural aspects of the craft. We will draw from assigned readings, case studies, and hopefully guest lecturers and cartoonists to better understand the thinking behind and the impact of New Yorker cartoons.
As homework, students will be required to illustrate and explain 2 of their own cartoons after each lecture, of which must relate to either or both the artists and decade we studied. Work will not be graded on artistic or writing prowess, but on completion and effort. Students will not be required to share their work with the entire class (though it is encouraged).
At the end of the semester, students will submit three original cartoons in some way related to UC Berkeley and influenced by one of the cartoonists we discussed during the semester. This will be accompanied by a written submission.
Attendance is mandatory, and both online and in-person lectures will be made available.
No day(s) left until application deadline!
