The Intro to Orthopedic Sciences DeCal works alongside Bone Health Initiative, UC Berkeley’s only student organization focused on bone health education and advocacy. BHI primarily focuses on community outreach by delivering timely bone health information that supports the development and maintenance of strong and healthy bones as well as the prevention, detection, and treatment of bone diseases. That being said, this DeCal will begin with educating students on how to maintain healthy bones and prevent osteoporosis while training them on how to educate others on this topic. After the first module, the course will develop into a more scientific approach to orthopedics, focused on anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics.
This course is 2 units (Pass/No Pass) and is split into three lecture-based modules: 1) Bone Basics, 2) Bone Pathophysiology, and 3) Biomechanics & Musculoskeletal System. The class will be mainly lecture-based with a few interactive workshops and simulations. This Decal is intended to be in-person for the Spring 2022 semester, offered on Mondays from 6:30-8:00 pm PST. Grading will be based primarily on attendance to lectures, quizzes on each of the modules, one exam, and a student-led presentation at the end. Do note that this course is not designed to be difficult; our main goal as a facilitating team is to inspire students taking the course to take good care of their bone health while also equipping them with the knowledge needed to educate others on bone disease prevention!
