This DeCal aims to give insight for students wishing to learn how to be an effective mentor to those around them. Through the ANova-sponsored College Mentorship Program (CMP), mentors will work with high-school mentees through the college application process. This course will include weekly mini-lectures and peer-to-peer discussions, whose goal is to complement each mentor's CMP sessions with their mentee.
As a DeCal, this course is taken P/NP ONLY. It is a 1 unit class and attendance is a major requirement in earning the unit. Passing the class requires completion of every assignment and consistent attendance to CMP sessions. Attendance to each weekly decal is an easy way to earn points! CMP sessions will be scheduled between the mentor and mentee on a need-to-need basis (weekly, bi-weekly, etc), but the mentor is expected to attend every session scheduled to pass.
We will be requiring small journal entries meant to be completed after each CMP session with your mentee. They should not take more than 15 minutes to complete and will be designed to promote active reflection of the time spent with your mentee. Prompts will be assigned with each journal.
Small group activities are group work usually during the decal and may require a small amount of at-home preparation. Examples of these include sharing mentorship experiences, reflection journals, etc.
For the final assignment, mentors will have a choice between a creative assignment or a 2-page paper about one or more decal topics. More details about creative assignment options will be announced at a later date.
No day(s) left until application deadline!
