This course is designed to help students create, craft, and teach lessons to elementary-aged students about anything they are passionate about. Students will gain an understanding of how to make a lesson plan, insight into teaching methodologies, and the past, present, and future structural issues of our current American education system. This DeCal will be centered on the students’ experiences lesson planning, teaching, and learning in the modern educational climate, with a heavy emphasis on community service and self-reflection. The first half of the course will consist of building the foundations of lesson planning and teaching lessons in local classrooms virtually. While the students will continue curating and teaching lessons during the second half of the class, more class time will be devoted to learning about educational inequities through discussions, short lectures, and guest speakers. We will utilize a student-centered approach, so the topics covered on this syllabus are subject to change depending on the interest of the DeCal’s student mentors.
