This course is designed to introduce you to a more critical, scientific approach when analyzing skincare. Throughout the 12 weeks, you’ll be introduced to three modules: Skin Anatomy, Dermatology, and Formulation Chemistry/Building a Routine; and every week we’ll focus on a new topic within these modules. These topics will be surveyed in depth through our weekly two-hour meetings and weekly individual reading reflections.
At the beginning of the course, students will have the opportunity to submit specific relevant topics they would like to be covered. The most popular topic will be covered in one of the final weeks of our course.
The weekly readings are listed in the course schedule in the syllabus. Reflections will be due on bCourses at 11:59pm a week after it is assigned.
The midterm assignment will be due on October 11 at 11:59pm (submit through bCourses). You will write a one-page paper about any skin condition you choose. More details to follow.
The final assignment will be due on November 29 at 11:59pm (submit through bCourses). You will create a “before and after” of your skincare routine — your routine before the class and your routine now, using knowledge about ingredients and skincare products that you learned over the semester. Students will present their final assignment to the rest of the class.
You will earn a Pass if you...
- Attend all lectures (2 absences allowed, no questions asked)
- Complete all reading reflection assignments
- Complete midterm and final assignments
We would like to thank everyone for their interest in our DeCal! We have unexpectedly received a large amount of emails from students who are interested in enrolling in our course, yet are on the waitlist or cannot join the waitlist.
As a result, we have decided to start an Instagram page for the class that will act as a blog. We plan on posting fun skincare facts, routine tips, and student assignments/projects they have completed throughout the semester. This way, students who can't secure a spot in the course will at least keep up with what we're learning in class and can hopefully get the opportunity to enroll next semester!
