The Linux SysAdmin DeCal is back for Fall 2020!

This course will cover the basics of administering a Linux-based server environment in the manner of the EECS Instructional Servers (hivexx.cs.b.e) and the Open Computing Facility (tsunami.ocf.b.e, etc.). By the end of this course, we expect you to be completely comfortable using GNU/Linux, understand in a broad sense how the system’s various parts work together, e.g. init, filesystems, services, daemons, etc., understand basic networking, have a good sense about maintaining system security, understand system administration essentials in general and have a practical taste of what sysadmins do in industry.

This course offers two tracks: a beginner track which serves as a no-experience-required introduction to Linux, and an advanced track for students who are already familiar with Linux. Although we do assume prior knowledge in the advanced track (and therefore cover material at a faster pace), the only real prerequisite is a desire to learn. Both tracks will get started fast and move quickly - there’s a lot to cover.

For each track, 10 lab assignments will be offered throughout the semester. In order to receive credit for taking the course, you must complete all labs (with up to 2 unexcused late labs due by the end of the semester). Due to the online nature of this semester, while we expect all students to attend scheduled lecture times we do not intend to require attendance.

All interested students should attend one of our infosessions (Tuesday/Thursday Sept. 8, 10 at 8pm, at ocf.io/decalzoom) to learn more about the course and how to apply. We will release Lab 0 closer to this time. A subset of students who attend the infosession and complete Lab 0 will be enrolled in the course.
