Though been with us for a long, long time through comic books, Marvel has experienced a sort of rebirth on the big screen in the past 10–15 years. And while, scholars and scientists have all but shunned them as meaningless teenage fads, a look across the theatre at the last *snap* in Endgame all but prove that the impact goes well beyond just us kids.
Superheroes traditionally represented the best, the brightest, the strongest of society. They gave us icons to look up to - idealistic, self-righteous, perfect idols. But that's not it anymore. The humanisation of these larger than life characters in their rebirth gave us something more to hold on to. We started to see elements of our struggles in Thor's depression and Flash's romantic problems. We found common ground.
In this course, we explore the world of Marvel through its cinematic universe to discover this common ground. We will journey through the main set of Marvel movies, beginning from Iron Man (2008) and coming all the way to Spiderman: Far from Home (2019). Through this journey, we will explore topics, themes and issues that are brought about in these movies. We will also try to explore what makes the franchise so compelling in terms of artistic innovation, character development, business models and marketing strategies.
Key Learning Outcomes:
Students should be able to see the movies and point out the various social, ethical, political and economic themes that are highlighted within them. They should be able to critically analyze MCU’s presence and relevance in the modern world. The course is designed to focus more on how real-world themes and issues are portrayed in the movies. Students, will thus, be part of heated discussions regarding the same.
