As Professor Terry Johnson notes in his advice page, the BioE curriculum is not intended to train you in solving “problems that have been solved before” but rather “new, unexplored” ones. A key part of this training lies in looking “for people whose careers you would like to have,” “consider[ing] their skills and qualifications,” and “thinking about how you can acquire” those skills.
But how can you find those people you want to emulate? How can you identify what new, unexplored problems you want to tackle? And, most importantly, what concentrations and electives on campus help you acquire the skills you need to solve those problems?
Breaking down BioE helps answer all these questions using a speaker series, course advising, and analytical group discussions interleaved with journal clubs. We explore the intersections of BioE with fields such as MSE, MCB, and EECS.
We help you identify your particular BioE subfield of interest, and the concentration that will help you acquire the skills needed to excel in that arena. Additionally, we enhance course planning by helping you select judicious electives, with access to advice and guidance from our course instructor, Professor Dorian Liepmann, and BioEHS alumni/upperclassmen. By relating the classes in your concentration to your goals, our class also heightens your engagement with on-campus classes.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Understanding the contemporary landscape of BioE subfields, informed by the experiences, advice and insight of older BioE undergraduates and alumni
2. Deconstructing complex, real-world applications of Bioengineering into familiar, academic BioE concepts (also, in the process, applying a single set of fundamental BioE concepts to several distinct real-world applications)
3. Networking, accessing and connecting with alumni, professors and research scientists.
4. Developing intuition about which personalized, BioE-based career pathway is best for you
5. Selecting a concentration based on career aspirations
Increased familiarity with on-campus resources relevant to aspired career pathway
