The course will discuss a wide spectrum of aspects of soccer from rules and regulations to different types of competitions, notable players and historical moments. In the first three weeks, we will learn how soccer is played, its basic skills and rules, and the history behind the sport. We will discuss how soccer has started in its early ages and its transformation to become the sport it is today. Starting Week 4, we will talk about each position in the team and their roles for the next four weeks. We will learn about key players who have excelled in their respective positions and watch clips of them to discuss and analyze why they are regarded as legends in those roles. We will then learn about managers who have used the discussed players to excel their teams as well as their unique styles of play and formations. We will learn about soccer in popular culture and aspects of soccer besides the players and the team. We will end the course by watching historical moments and goals, and students’ presentations.
There are five assignments, 11 readings and 4 quizzes throughout the course. There will be a final presentation at the end the semester that everyone must submit and two excused absences.
