This course is an introduction to basic bicycle maintenance and repair. Students will learn the fundamentals of bicycle safety, mechanics, and component functionality. With the help of in-class lectures, worksheets, at-home readings, and hands-on skill tests, students will learn how to properly maintain and fix various types of bikes. The course is open to all students, regardless of experience level, but more specifically geared for students who have no prior knowledge of bikes and bike repair. By empowering UC Berkeley students to integrate the bicycle into their daily lives in a radically positive learning environment, this Decal course promotes a more sustainable, healthy, and vibrant community.
Lecture will focus on a different topic every week. Students will watch videos as a homework assignment, and they will be quizzed on the content. Students will also have to perform a set of skill tests throughout the semester, and they will have to volunteer at the shop to demonstrate mastery. The final project is a short paper on a bike-related topic. Attendance is mandatory, but students may miss a couple classes and make up more absences by volunteering.
The class will be held in the Bicycal Bike Shop on Lower Sproul under GBC (Golden Bear Café).
