In this course, students will engage weekly through classroom lecture and discussion on the long hxstory of Koreans in the United States. This course will focus on the transnational production of the Korean American community and particularly examine the role that foreign relations (especially U.S. militarism) has had in generating global immigration patterns. Additionally, this class will examine some of the most salient issues within the Korean American community, such as transnational adoption, post-colonial cultural production through Korean Hallyu, and domestic/sexual violence. Students are encouraged to fold in their own persxnal narratives and experiences as they relate to the course material.
Grading depends on weekly reading reflection, class participation, and attendance (no more than two unexcused absences).
