This class will attempt to explore the ancient past of Middle-Earth from both a historical and literary perspective, as well as from within, like the heroes of these stories, and without, as fans ourselves. Each class we will review material from the reading (primarily Tolkien's "The Silmarillion" and "Unfinished Tales", along with sections from "The Lord of The Rings") through quizzes and lecture, discuss both the readings and key motifs and themes that come up, and do a creative activity related to that week’s material. Expect both to be taught and to teach each other.
