This course begins with the basics, from what a stock is, what causes its price movements, and how to get started investing and trading. In our discussion, we will contrast stocks to other asset classes, focus on the differences between active and passive investing, and cover the different goals of retail and institutional investors. We will give an overview of ETFs, mutuals funds, index funds, and benchmarking. The class will then move into basic fundamental analysis. There will be a variety of lectures on important investing strategies such as Contrarian, High Yield, Growth at a Reasonable Price (GAARP), Value, Growth, etc. This class is designed for students who are not familiar with investing or may have traded in the past but wish to learn more. We plan to take a holistic approach to learn about investment, which will lend itself well to our discussion-oriented lecture style. Students of all backgrounds are welcome.
