The Berkeley Urban Garden Internship (BUGI) DeCal will take an interdisciplinary and intersectional look at the food system, using urban agriculture as a starting point. Because this course is in the Environmental Science, Policy and Management (ESPM) department, we will often invoke an environmental lens to explore how the process of growing, harvesting, delivering, preparing, eating, and disposing of food interacts with people and the environment. The class meets once a week for two hours. Class will consist of guest speakers and discussions, hands-on gardening lessons, learning activities, and field trips. The class will also include opportunities for student presentations, seed-to-table food shares, and facilitator-led mini-lessons. Class will be held in the Student Organic Garden (SOGA) on Virginia and Walnut St. unless there is bad weather or a need for the projector screen. There is also a required 2-hour field work commitment per week (2 hours per/week preferred, but other accommodations can be made as long as there are a total of 8 hours per month), which the student will complete outside of class. These field work hours represent a service-learning approach to exploring the food system. Students can choose any urban garden or farm in the Bay Area. Examples include: City Slicker Farms, Spiral Gardens, and the UC Gill Tract Farm. The location of field work hours is up to the student, although we will be happy to provide you with ideas and resources. Students must also attend a two hour workshop at SOGA or another garden during the semester. This is a SERC-sponsored Decal https://serc.berkeley.edu/decal-fellowship-program/
