This class serves as an introduction on how to analyze, research and change public policy. No prior experience in public policy is required and students are not expected or required to be majoring in social sciences. Students will complete the course with portfolio pieces including policy memos, sample policies and action plans. This course has only four assignments.
Students will be allowed to pick a social issue topic of their choosing with guidance from facilitators, and spend the semester exploring it. This will include identifying the relevant policies and jurisdictions that affect it, researching potential policy solutions and alternatives, planning advocacy campaigns, drafting policy memos and writing sample policies.
Class sessions will be weekly with discussion as their primary component (choose one discussion section -- either Tuesday or Wednesday). Students will be able to enroll for 1 to 3 units depending on their interest level, with different levels of work and expectation for each.
