Course Description:
This course is an analysis of Donald Glover’s personal background, creative process, musical devices, symbolism, and revolutionary influence on the music industry through use of his generated name from the WuTang name generator, Childish Gambino. Course structure includes lectures, group discussions, group presentations, collaborative learning, and more.
Course Goals
● To present a new way of thinking in regards to art and literature.
● To curate weekly response assignments that encourage deeper literary. exploration of Childish Gambino’s artistry both in lyrics and through visuals and performances.
● To facilitate exposure to a history of Donald Glover’s rising and progression as a writer and artist — in the context of the music industry’s critics, a comparison of his style with other styles present within the genre and the state of his career at the time.
● To provide a safe environment to discuss all of Donald Glover’s media, from TV to music, with sensitivity, creative respect, and open-minded thinking to allow everyone to contribute and benefit from being a part of this class.
● To examine and dissect the social commentary Donald Glover presents in his music on topics such as race, social media, familial relationships, and the effects such commentary has had on society.
● Understand the connections between Donald Glover’s musical work and other forms of media in an group effort to convey such messages.
There will be a heavy emphasis on the effects of social media on society Donald Glover depicts throughout his second album Because, The Internet. Therefore, this class will operate around the 15 episode podcast series on Because, The Internet by DISSECT.

Class Participation
This class heavily operates around the work students put in during class time. Actively participating during group discussions, listening sessions, and other parts of class are extremely important.
Attendance: Missing more than one class without an excuse will negatively affect your class participation grade.
