Attack on Titan Academy is UC Berkeley's premier titan research and analysis organization. We combine creativity, imagination, and critical thinking skills to decipher the hidden meanings behind this one-of-a-kind masterpiece created by manga artist Hajime Isayama.
This course re-examines the famous Japanese animation Attack on Titan from four different areas, thereby challenging students to think both creatively and critically about the contemporary world. Through utilizing models and theories drawn from political science, philosophy, game theory, and leadership, the course aims to strengthen students’ intellectual understanding of Attack on Titan and their ability to apply the knowledge to real-life issues related to the distribution of power, domination, free will vs. determinism, the game of warfare, and strategic thinking.
As the prerequisite of this course, students should be genuinely passionate about Attack on Titan and possess adequate understanding about the plot, characters, and themes. It is recommended that students refresh their memory about some key scenes and plot twists during winter break in order to better make use of class discussion time.
The passing grade for this course requires a minimum of 70%. In order to successfully complete this course, students are expected to attend all class sessions and participate actively during class discussions. The following weightings are given to each graded component:
Participation (30%): This component of the final grade is based on class attendance and discussion participation.
Project (36%): This component of the final grade is based upon three in-class projects spread throughout the semester (12% each). Detailed instructions about each project will be released at a later date.
Quiz (0%): This component is not included in the calculation of the final grade. Quiz will be given at the end of each Area of Focus to help students assess their own understanding. Students are encouraged to take this opportunity to identify their own weakness and review the course content as project and final presentation both draw core concepts from the lecture.
Final Presentation (34%): This component of the final grade is based upon an individual presentation that assesses a student's ability to analyze and think critically about a specific scene or concept within Attack on Titan. Detailed instructions about the presentation will be released at a later date.
