Welcome to the Primatology DeCal at Berkeley! Through readings, class discussions, and activities you will be given opportunities to reflect on what you are learning about our distant animal relatives. Our responsibility as facilitators is to work as your “guides by your side;” however, in order to do well in this course you must actively participate, continuously try to apply the concepts, and ask questions if you do not understand!
We are planning to have hybrid meetings on Tuesday late afternoon/evenings! In-person meetings will be held in the Gifford room (room 221) in the Anthropology and Art Practice Building.
Course Goals:
This course is designed to walk through the basics of primatology and human evolutionary biology to give students a broad understanding of our relatives in the animal kingdom. By the end of this course, you should be able to:
● Understand the difference between a monkey and an ape
● Understand generally what a primate is and what that means
● Understand how we evolved from nonhuman primates
● Identify different primate species using a suite of traits
Class Activities:
For our class, we are planning on creating a variety of weekly assignments to help you engage in the material in fun and entertaining ways! Weekly assignments can range from reading responses to creative assignments. The goal isn’t to simply reiterate what we are teaching, but instead to engage with the material.
