Overview:
This course is project-based and intended for students interested in a career in data science and analytics, with applications to the actuarial career. It is designed to give students an environment to work with other students on analytical/actuarial cases that simulate the real-life problems faced by analysts.
Understanding that Berkeley offers no Actuarial Science department, it is vital that we provide the necessary resources for students to excel in the career. This DeCal will allow students to experience analytics in a practical manner beyond exams, preparing them for an analytics internship or career. Our current resources have proven insufficient for students entering the industry, and it is necessary that Cal Actuarial League adapts to the fast-paced environment of change in the industry for students. This DeCal will fulfill this purpose. By the end of the course, students will have working knowledge of basic analytic programs such as Excel or SQL. Students will have a working knowledge of problem-solving in analytics with a focus on business implications and acumen.
Furthermore, students will be equipped to understand and approach analytical problems in a holistic manner, considering ethics and the context of data with which they work.
Attendance:
Unexcused absences will adversely affect the students’ participation score. If you are going to miss a lecture, especially during a case study or project workshop, please email the facilitator in advance.
Grading:
Grades will be based on attendance/participation and projects. There will be 3 projects throughout the semester, and the 2 highest scoring projects will be taken into account when finalizing grades.
