Students who take this course will personally reflect on why they want to go to law school and ask deep
questions about what they want to accomplish at Cal and for their career. This class will explore the
different experiences of being a pre-law student at Berkeley, a law student, and post-graduate
professional. This course will primarily be discussion-based using Professor Darren Zook’s book, Law
School: A Guide for the Perplexed, and relevant articles. Throughout the DeCal we will focus on different
themes around potential paths in the legal field and how to achieve them. This is a lecture-based course
with a required discussion section.
The coursework for this course include:
Weekly Reflections: bCourses discussion post (150-200 words) of thoughts, interesting points, and general
reflection about the previous week’s course materials and lecture. The prompts for the week will be
posted on bCourses by Sunday night. These will be due 11:59 pm Pacific Time the night before the last
class session of the week. Extensions may be granted upon valid reason.
Final Paper: A 2 page self-reflection paper about how their idea of “pre-law” has changed over the course
of the semester. Due the last week of class.
