This course introduces students to the changing landscape of healthcare delivery, spurred by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. It will teach students the necessary skills to work as telehealth coordinators for a number of community healthcare organizations and, thereby, play a role in improving digital equity.
Throughout the course, students will spend 3-4 extracurricular hours per week working with patients and providers to facilitate a smooth telehealth experience, thereby gaining a better understanding of the needs and experiences of both as it relates to telehealth and healthcare. They will gain critical clinical experience and the practical skills necessary to facilitate healthcare delivery, which will be advantageous as they pursue careers in medicine and healthcare.
Course lectures will feature guest lecturers and will cover concepts including —
1) Critical understanding of healthcare delivery via telehealth platforms
2) Barriers to access and equity in telehealth
3) Advantages and disadvantages of telehealth as a method of healthcare delivery
4) Leveraging digital tools to make healthcare more accessible.
By the end of the course, students will be able to understand the barriers that perpetuate inequitable access to telehealth and ways to address the problems to make the service more accessible by affected populations, address technology problems of patients and providers as they arise in a real-world clinical setting, and understand the benefits of Telehealth and possible improvements that can be made to this form of healthcare delivery.
