This class will focus on the intersection of queerness and Islam in both the East and the West. It's a common misconception that these two groups, Muslims and queer people, cannot coexist. More than that, that there cannot be queer Muslims. This class will dissect this misconception and introduce academic work that explains the identity politics of the two groups separately and together. We will cover identity politics, gender and queer theory in relation to Islam, Islam in relation to gender and sexuality, and the ways in which intersectionality affects the political landscape. By the end of this course, students are expected to have a better understanding of academia within Islam, intersectionality, queer analysis, and progressivism in queer and Muslim political movements. There will be a paper and a final presentation for the class. Class will be held in Dwinelle, Room 250 on Wednesdays at 6:30-8:00PM
