For many high schoolers, high school is the final step in a journey of struggles. We want to transform that perception so that high school is instead merely the first step in the quest to success. This DeCal is a tutoring organization that aims to assist and improve the academic experience for students at Berkeley High. More specifically, UC Berkeley students will be tutoring these high schoolers through Berkeley High's College Career Center. This course will allow tutors to become not only a dependable resource for these students, but also a mentor to convince them of the importance of education.
The overall goal of the DeCal is to provide consistent and high-quality tutoring services to high school students in order to create meaningful bonds between students and tutors as well as promote college awareness. We hope to provide more than just tutoring. We strive to make a difference in each of these students who come from such distinct backgrounds by building a personal confidence that will encourage them to achieve a higher education.
High school students require consistent and dedicated tutors who can come every week. The Decal students will provide their expertise on a variety of knowledge in various subjects such as Chemistry, Algebra, Calculus, Economics, Environmental Science, etc. All tutors will sign in at Berkeley High School to record their hours, Tutors that fail to attend Berkeley High for more than two consecutive weeks, unless in exceptional circumstances, will automatically receive a no pass for this course, even if missed hours are made up at a future time. Total hour counts are calculated at the end of the semester. If you fail to complete hours you will receive a NP for the course regardless of completed assignments.
Weekly assignments will consist of one 100-200 word journal entry which will be due Sundays at 11:59PM. Note: Tutors can only miss up to 2 assignments (not including reflection papers). All assignments will be uploaded onto the bCourses website.
Tutors will be expected to complete two mandatory reflection papers. The first paper will be due at midterm and the other at the end of the semester (the Final Reflection Paper). In these papers, tutors will reflect in depth about their experience as a tutors. Tutors will not be passing the course if the reflection papers are not submitted on time.
No day(s) left until application deadline!
