Bear Closet is a space for LGBTQ+ students to share their personal narratives and foster community. Through class discussions and research, we will explore LGBTQ+ experiences and learn more about the community and how we can best serve them. We welcome anyone interested in sharing their queer-related stories and experiences (i.e. personal, of a friend/family member, etc.) and we will discuss intersections of queer/trans identities and labels. Rather than strictly focusing on assignments and deadlines, especially given COVID-19, our two-unit DeCal prioritizes discussion, mutual respect, understanding, and forming connections.
Given current circumstances, we are unable to provide the physical safe space of a classroom for us to learn and share with one another, and we know that this space cannot be exactly replicated on Zoom. We also know that your home situations may prevent or limit your participation in our space, but we are redefining what active participation looks like virtually. For example, we will be utilizing the chat function to still connect with folks who may not be able to have their mics or cameras on and hosting several virtual visits to middle schools. Together, we strive for a safe learning/sharing virtual space while centering ourselves in queer and trans issues and how those intersect with race, ethnicity, gender, disability, citizenship status, religion, housing status, and countless others. We aim to break away from our conventional/colonial understandings of the gender binary and hetero-patriarchy. Through sharing our experiences with one another, we have the ability to grow and shape our understanding of our own identities and our place in society.
