This course is about sex. This is a vastly broad topic and the goal of this course is not only to inform you about various issues and topics in sexuality, but to provide a safe place for discussion, tolerance, and understanding. Our primary goal is to interact, learn from, and understand each other coming from various backgrounds and having different sexual preferences, ideas, and influences. Our secondary goal is to discuss various sexual topics starting with the basics including anatomy, STI’s, and safer sex, birth control, etc.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Students will be able to identify and explain the function of reproductive anatomy and pleasure
physiology.
2. Students will have a broad base of knowledge in sexual health and sexuality with which to make
informed decisions regarding their personal health and that of potential partners.
3. Students will have the skills to properly use safer sex supplies as well as knowledge of resources
on campus to help prevent sexually transmitted infections, HIV and unintended pregnancy.
4. Students will possess the ability to support peers and friends’ learning about sexuality, gender
identity, sexual orientation, and sexual health. Thus helping to create a sex positive environment on campus.
Attendance:
• Class participation is a major part of your grade, therefore, attendance is mandatory.
• You are expected to attend all class sessions and be on time.
• Attendance will be taken at the beginning of the class.
Absences:
• Two absences are permitted throughout the semester. Three or more absences will result in a failing grade. If needed, contact the staff coordinator to see what sort of remedial work you need to complete in order to pass the class.
Assignments:
1. Sexual Health Event Reflection: Attend some kind of sexual health or general health related event and write a 1-2 page paper about your experience (e.g. Vagina monologues, sexual health fair, sexual health counseling). There will be many events throughout the semester for you to attend!
2. Sexpert Clinic Visit Write-Up: Attend a SHEP clinic with a Sexpert and write a brief reflection on your experience.
3. Sexploration Paper: Write a 1-2 page paper on any sexual health topic of your choosing, or a reflection on any personal sexual health experience.
4. Group Project, Presentation: At the end of the class you will be getting into groups to cover some sexual health topic, in which you will give a 10 minute presentation to the class on the topic you chose.
5. Sex & COVID : Write a 1-2 page paper about how the pandemic has impacted some sexual health topic. The paper can focus on personal experiences or any other sexual health topic.
6. Various Article Reading and Short Reflections: Articles will be assigned by the student staff.
