When people talk about race, why is it that whiteness is rarely discussed? What does it mean that this nation and the globe normalizes white identity as the standard definition of a human? When we talk about racial justice, we must challenge the status quo and uproot definitions of identity that no longer serve the fight for racial equity.
This decal will dissect the historical power dynamics that constitute, perpetuate, and weaponize whiteness. We will have uncomfortable conversations that confront privilege and positionality and also learn from liberatory resistance movements from across the globe. This class will not coddle white fragility or seek to be an “Allyship 101” class but rather is designed to deconstruct, dismantle, and uproot whiteness as a construct.
Fall 2020 will be the 6th consecutive semester of Deconstructing Whiteness. Students and community members of all racial and ethnic backgrounds have praised this course as one of their favorite classes at CAL. Will you join our intentional conversations about race, power, identity, and the path to liberation?
