Every year, pollinators die at an unprecedented rate. Even though they are responsible to pollinating 2/3 of the world's crops, the gravity of this worldwide disaster has not given the appropriate attention in the media or online. The best way to combat this change is for people like you to learn everything there is about these pollinators and how we can correct course.
Students will learn about the value and diversity of the group of organisms under the title pollinators. Through both reading, discussion, and hands-on experience connecting with nature near your home, students will gain a better perspective of this truly remarkable group of organisms and the ways we can help alleviate the number of threats facing them from human society. This will be predominantly a discussion-based and field-based course. This course will incorporate presentations from the decal facilitators, and guest lectures from related departments at the University to introduce the class to the number of resources available related to environmental health, stewardship, and entomology.
The goal of the Save the Bees Decal is to provide students the experience, support, and knowledge to understand why we care about pollinators like bees, how they are struggling, and what we can do to save them. Students will develop presentation skills, effective communication, and storytelling. Throughout the semester, there will be ample time for peer discussions. This class is meant to be fun, engaging, and interesting! Weekly webinars will be provided too from Xerces society.
No prerequisites required. This is a great way to be introduced to pollinators, the environment, and principles of public policy. Guest Lectures also! Computers will be needed as this will be entirely online.
