The Berkeley Fiction Review is a student-run, ASUC-sponsored, annual publication that publishes artwork and 12-15 short stories from around the world. We publish innovative short stories from every genre. Our mission is to look for innovative short fiction that plays with form and content, as well as traditionally constructed stories with fresh voices and original ideas. Established in 1981, BFR is the second oldest literary journal on campus. In May, we will publish Issue 41, and our 14th issue is in the Library of Congress.
We emulate a small press on a much smaller scale as a college journal. Our goal is to teach foundational skills in publishing across multiple departments such as editing, publicity, and production and allow students to familiarize themselves with both the publishing and media industry through our journal and online magazine.
As staff members, you will read, discuss, and vote on submissions for publication. You are responsible for providing thoughtful commentary on submitted short stories, which determines what submissions will be published in our next issue. In class, you will discuss stories that are in the final rounds of consideration, and help us select works that will resonate with our readers.
Students also have a chance to have their own stories published in the journal during Student Story Week where we invite submissions from students in the class.
Our first info session will take place on September 3rd from 6:30-8pm on Zoom, link here: https://berkeley.zoom.us/j/377564781
