This course was designed to allow students to critically engage with the term and the reality of genocide. Students will learn about multiple case studies to deepen their understanding as well as learn how, when, and why the term 'genocide' is used. The class will be predominantly discussion-based, supplemented by using Samantha Power’s Pulitzer Prize winning book on genocide: A Problem from Hell, as well as other readings and documentaries. Throughout the DeCal we will focus on different themes around genocide in order to gain a greater understanding of the different case studies and how to prevent such atrocities from happening in the future. Emphasis will be placed on modern genocides, genocide studies, and genocide prevention/intervention.
Grading for this decal is determined by: attendance (25%), participation (20%), 4 reading reflections (25% total), and a final project (30%). Students are allowed to miss 2 sections before their grade is negatively impacted. Reading reflections are short, 1/2 page written assignments, and the final project allows students to pick a 'problem area' and study it in more depth.
