Course Description
This course will focus on basic sewing and design skills. The DeCal is taught in conjunction with Fashion and Student Trends (FAST), a student fashion club on campus. As such, the primary goal of the course is to give designers the technical skills needed to produce and show a collection at the end of the semester Fashion Show. The class will be a combination of learning through technical demos and producing work in studio. The purpose of this course is to provide a space that teaches skills that would otherwise not be taught on the campus of UC Berkeley. This DeCal facilitates the creation of a fashion designer community — helping those interested in pursuing fashion careers.
Course Requirements
Class admission is dependent on the completion of an application and interview process that selects 20 designers/design teams for the end of the semester Fashion Show. In order to participate in this class, you must be able to attend the FAST Fashion Show on April 25, 2020. No prior sewing/design experience is necessary.
Course Structure
- Class Time
The Runway Fashion Design Basics course will take place weekly for two hours. Class time will be used to both learn skills via demos, small class assignments, and open studio time to work on the Fashion Show looks. Attendance is mandatory and counts for a significant portion of your grade.
- Independent Designing
While there will be ample class time to work on your designs, you will need to allocate outside time for material shopping/salvaging and the construction of your looks. For every hour spent in class, there is an expectation of 5-6 hours of outside independent work. This would mean 6-8+ hours of outside work per week. First time designers must make a 4-look collection for the show, and first time design teams (2 students max per team) must make a 5-look collection. Returning designers/design teams may make more than the 4/5-look minimum.
- Fashion Show
The end of the semester Fashion Show is organized by Fashion and Student Trends (FAST). This semester’s FAST Fashion Show will take place on Saturday, April 25, 2020. Designers are required to report at 9:30am to Pauley Ballroom with all of their completed looks. The day will consist of dress rehearsals, hair and makeup, and set up for the evening. There will be an hour dinner break around 5pm. The pre-show party begins at 6pm, and the show starts promptly at 7pm.
No day(s) left until application deadline!
