This is a course giving Berkeley students the opportunity to learn about teaching hands-on science to young learners. It also covers achievement gaps in education correlated with racial and socioeconomic backgrounds, especially in STEM fields. This class will contain a series of lectures and assignments to help students think about how we can work towards equitable achievement in education. Every other week Berkeley students will travel to Oakland elementary schools to lead hands-on science experiments with academically-struggling second graders. The bulk of the coursework will be designing and implementing these interactive science experiments to provide these children exposure to a curriculum they wouldn’t normally receive.
