Many of us grew up watching beloved Pixar films such as Toy Story, Monster’s Inc., and Finding Nemo, but these movies seem to captivate audiences of all ages due to their universal themes, many of which relate to environmental ethics. This course begins by exploring the creative process of filmmakers in conceptualizing these animations. We will then transition to discussing the environmental ethics components and themes underlying these narratives.
At the end of this course, successful students will be able to explicate on how Pixar creates its films and discover the behind-the-scenes work of the filmmakers, and communicate the messages and symbolism in Pixar films that connect to environmental and bioethical themes.
Attendance and participation will be significant because classes will consist of in-class discussions based on questions posed by the facilitators. One excused absence will be permitted. Throughout the course, students will also be required to complete online discussions on bCourses and a creative final project that explores class themes in a Pixar movie of their choice.
We may go on a field trip to the Walt Disney Family Museum or the Pixar Headquarters as well, depending on student interest and availability.
