[UPDATE] The class is nearly fully enrolled. If you are interested in signing up, please email us (sunmarcuk99@berkeley.edu or kellychou@berkeley.edu) and we will make sure to put you on the waitlist if needed. Thank you!
We aim to introduce students to the principles of green chemistry, and apply those principles in weekly “case studies” of common chemical consumer products. By the end of the course, students will gain a more nuanced understanding of the potential harm associated with common products, and a new perspective on our reliance on useful chemicals in everyday life. Finally, students will be able to use what they have learned as a framework to evaluate products not covered in the course.
There will be a weekly online quiz (GoogleForms) as well as a final project. The class is structured to be 1 hour lecture, 30 mins discussion.
This class is directed towards everyone who would like to understand the fundamental chemistry behind consumer products and learn the green chemistry way of thinking. A background in general chemistry is recommended but not necessary. We encourage students from different backgrounds and majors to attend this class!
