This two credit American Studies decal explores the mythology that contributes to the way we define America, and attempts to deconstruct it in order to complicate students’ understanding of American history and culture.
This course will focus on four primary units: the intersection of womanhood and oppression, cultural hypocrisy, the history of state violence in America both at home and abroad, and the competing visions of the American dream. The goal of this course not to unpack everything worth saying. Rather, by exploring the interactions of culture, politics, and historical narrative, we hope for students to develop a broader understanding of American history as we know it. Discussing such topics will allow for students to unravel hidden American history and attempt to understand why those stories are excluded from the greater American narrative.
Class will begin Thursday, February 6th. A short, mandatory information session will be held Thursday, January 30th. Admissions decisions will be released on Saturday, February 1st.
