The Policy Review at Berkeley DeCal course is designed to help students build interviewing, academic writing, policy-making and policy analysis skills through extensive writing, fieldwork, and simulations.
Fall 2019 Theme:
Building Bridges: Finding Consensus in Public Policy
Every policy problem has a set of stakeholders that must come to a consensus. This semester’s edition of Policy Review at Berkeley will be focused on identifying procedural tools for consensus-building in policymaking. We will discuss local politics, multistakeholder governance, human rights, climate policies, and issues of consensus in all such issue areas. Students will have the opportunity to write about issues of consensus building in their issue areas of choice and draft potential procedural mechanisms of their own to mitigate goal-setting issues in public policy.
Student performance will be based on student engagement in class and in-class activities (i.e. peer editing, simulations, etc.). Students will also be evaluated on the quality of their weekly reading assignments and of their paper assignments.
This course is offered through the Goldman School of Public Policy. ***STUDENTS WITH A PASSING GRADE WILL RECEIVE TWO (2) UPPER DIVISION PUBLIC POLICY UNITS THAT COUNT TOWARDS THE PUBLIC POLICY UNDERGRADUATE MINOR REQUIREMENTS.***
