In this course we will explore the interdisciplinary connections between poetry, nature, and ecological science. We will discuss the role poetry plays in imagining and reimagining ecology, in responding to ecological crises and injustice, and in contributing to environmental change. Throughout this course we hope to challenge foundational beliefs and assumptions regarding how the world functions, develop a more nuanced understanding of the interrelationship between nature, poetry, and science, and exercise our own practice of perceiving and responding to our environment through both poetic and scientific lenses.
No formal understanding of poetry or ecological science is required. The main objective of this course is to create a comfortable and creative space within which we can use poetry as a means to reflect and explore how we understand, perceive, and relate to the natural environment. The coursework consists of weekly readings (short poems) and one reflection poem to be submitted via Bcourses. We will also have various ecologists and poets visiting our class as guest speakers. Discussion is a huge component of the course, so please plan on attending all class sessions :)
