The Blue & Gold Yearbook is the oldest publication on campus and has been publishing the events, issues, and trends of the Berkeley community every year since 1875! B&G consists of four teams: Copy, Design, Photo, and Marketing. In this course, the facilitators, as well as the team leaders from our club, will help the students develop professional skills in writing, graphic design, photography and business through practical, hands-on exposure. Workshops will be hosted so students will be learning about the various aspects of journalism beyond the discipline they’ve devoted themselves to.
Students are required to choose one discipline out of the four we offer: Copy, Design, Photo, or Marketing. Students will be focusing on developing skills specifically, but not limited, to the discipline they choose. Students in Copy will gain skills in interviewing, creative writing, and have the opportunity to attend and cover exciting events on campus. In Design, students will become well-versed in design principles and build a strong portfolio in Adobe Creative Suite (particularly InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator). Students in Photo will build a working knowledge of various DSLR camera settings and lenses, as well as hone best-practice techniques to capture professional-quality photos. Students in Marketing will learn how to plan, pitch, and execute campaigns centered around brand awareness, content marketing, sales strategy, and can also pick up some web design skills if they so choose. Across all disciplines, students will gain valuable skills in areas such as time management, leadership, and team-building. While each student prioritizes their own discipline’s assignments, they are encouraged to explore the other disciplines in their spare time if they are interested.
