Description
Marian Diamond, the late UC Berkeley Professor of Anatomy, first created this course to acquaint students with anatomy applications in various health fields, through seminars given by successful alumni. This course will continue that tradition and will feature mostly Berkeley graduates, who are now successful medical health professionals, in a series of 1-hour weekly seminars. Guest speakers will provide insight into their daily professional lives, their academic and personal paths that led them to their careers, and their perspectives on the medical field. This course is designed to give students a glimpse of the broad applications of anatomy, outside of the classroom.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to achieve the following:
- Understand real-world applications of material taught in academic courses
- Obtain insight on the professional and personal lives of medical professionals
- Gain exposure to various medical fields
- Learn of the requirements for entry into different medical careers
- Build network with successful Berkeley graduates
Readings
There will be weekly readings, posted on bCourses prior to the relevant lecturer’s presentation. These readings provide general information on the guest speakers’ field and specialty. Students are required to read the articles before class and come prepared to engage with the speakers.
Grading & Attendance
The class is graded on a P/NP basis and students will receive 1 unit upon completion.
Students must complete ALL assignments and attend ALL lectures to pass the course.
Assignments
There will be 12 assignments over the course of the semester, assigned weekly following each guest speaker’s presentation. Each assignment is comprised of two parts:
(5 points) Reflection:
A two-sentence, thoughtful reflection on something the speaker said that was interesting or meaningful to you. We will be sending these sentences to our lecturers as a thank you for coming out here to speak to us, so please do put some effort into them. Vague answers will not be accepted.
(5 points) Research:
Each week, students will research career-development resources, volunteer opportunities, or other similar resources and submit one URL to be viewed by the entire class. These URLs should provide opportunities for students to apply their knowledge and interest in anatomy, whether it be in medicine, public health, or otherwise.
Total: 10 points per week x 13 weeks of instruction = 130 points
