This class will attempt to explore the ancient past of Middle-Earth from both a historical and literary perspective, as well as from within, like the heroes of these stories, and without, as fans ourselves. In addition, we will strive to connect Middle-Earth’s storied history with its greatest tale, Each class we will review material from the reading (primarily "The Silmarillion" and "The Lord of the Rings", Book 1) through quizzes and lecture, discuss both the readings and key motifs and themes that come up, and do a creative activity related to that week’s material. Expect both to be taught and to teach each other.

Grading Policy:
This course will be graded on a P/NP basis; those who pass will receive 2 units in English 198.

The final grade in the class will be distributed as follows :
Participation (30%)
Quizzes (30%)
Term Project (40%)

Enrollment will be determined by application-- Selection criteria will be based on interest in Middle-Earth, enthusiasm for the course, and my judgment of your ability to bring life to in-class discussion.
