Of all the classes at Cal, not a single one is dedicated to aging! Aging is such an important topic that all of us face in regards to our loved ones and will eventually face as we grow old. So join us in our personal, international, and interdisciplinary discussion of this important subject. This course provides an introduction to contemporary issues in the sociological study of aging——how do the elderly affect society and how does society affect the elderly. We will discuss stereotypes, retirement, policies/welfare/healthcare, sexuality, caregiving, and dying. We will also consider how age-related issues intersect with socioeconomic status, gender, race, and ethnicity.
Assignments:
There will be materials for reading/ viewing. Reading/ viewing responses will be required before the class sessions. Students will also need to submit a post-participation response after each class. Students will be required to present on a topic of their choice and lead a 30 minute discussion for that class.
The main assignment for the class will be a Elder Partner Life Story Profile Paper. Students will interview an older adult (age 65 or older) whom they are comfortable talking to— this can be a family member, neighbor, friend, or someone from a volunteering event etc. about the older adult’s life experiences. Students will be asked to write a short paper to show off what they have learned both from the class and their relationship with their elder partner as well as to stretch beyond the course in exploring the interdisciplinary study of aging.
Attendance:
Students should plan to attend each class for the duration of the class meeting. Participation in class discussions is mandatory and serves as a tool for peer learning. Please speak to a course instructor as early as possible about accommodations related to disabilities, religious observances or events that will prevent you from attending class. Post participation responses may not be handed in for classes that the student did not attend, and missed reflections cannot be made up. Students must submit a minimum of 10 reflections in order to receive a passing grade.
