*Note: this DeCal welcomes all students, whether LGBTQ, an ally, or just interested in learning*
For anyone interested in sharing queer-related stories/experiences (i.e. personal, of a friend/family member, etc) at middle and high school classrooms, in hopes of motivating out or closeted youth to pursue college education with the assurance of a better future, Bear Closet is the space for you. Rather than strictly focusing on assignments and deadlines, this two-unit DeCal prioritizes class discussion and bonding among its members, for the sake of establishing a strong base for community service.
Students will be trained to prepare one 300-word narrative for each of the three modules during the semester about various topics (Berkeley's LGBTQ community, allyship, and combatting bullying), and will be given the chance to speak with the Pacific Center's Speaker's Bureau at middle and high schools as opportunities arise. Each module will consist of an introduction/class discussion day, a peer revision day, and a presentation day (a casual pizza party at the Pacific Center during which students share their speeches).
