The purpose of this course is to examine best practices in co-leading and apply these principles in the course of students’ current leadership efforts. For millennia, people have operated under the impression or illusion that there is and must be a solitary heroic leader for organizations to operate successfully. However, when we peel away this layer of perception what we almost always find is that there is one (or a couple of) key pairs that lead together. Whether it is a traditional family, led by a pair, or a start-up driven by synergies and differences, two’s bring powerful dynamics to leadership. Pairs build in essential leadership features like creativity, focus, accountability and encouragement.
This course is designed for people who are currently working in pairs – we have in mind political leaders on campus like ASUC senators with their chiefs of staff, as well as co-captains, and co-founders of social or business start-ups. Our expectation is that you will take the class with your partner. There are no prerequisites to this course. Students will learn through personalized leadership reports, guest speakers, weekly journals, interviewing inspirational duos in their field, and writing up a profile of these speakers as a final project.
