Discourse at Berkeley is a discussion-based class in which students are expected to attend at least 8 of the ~15 events hosted by the Berkeley Forum throughout the semester. Students can expect to be exposed to a wide range of disciplines as event speakers generally come from various field (i.e. entertainment, politics, journalism, business, science, etc.). Students may miss up to two classes without it impacting their grade, but must attend at least 8 Forum events throughout the semester and submit proof of their attendance to the course instructors. Class activities can include public speaking exercises, a history of discourse at Berkeley, and in-depth discussions on the questions posed by speakers at the weekly events. There are no other assignments required for the class except the final project and exam. The final project requires students to present a case on why a particular speaker should be brought to the Forum and how that speaker elevates free speech on campus. The final exam consists of a combination matching and free response.
