Pioneers in Engineering (PiE) is an outreach organization founded in 2008 by students who believed that no student should be denied a quality STEM education experience. Whether this is your first foray into the engineering world or you're a seasoned robotics competition veteran, PiE aims to provide a wide variety of experiences for you to explore your interests and develop whatever skillsets you may be looking to grow. This DeCal introduces you to PiE by placing you in one of our teams (business, education, engineering, software, operations, game design), which you would be working with for the duration of the semester during 2 hour worksessions held on Wednesday night and Saturday afternoons. This class is mainly participation and attendance based, with the main writing/reading assignments being updating documentation that helps keep our multi-year program running smoothly.
Our biggest event is a robotics competition held in the spring for local underserved high schools. During the fall, we will be busy creating/building/developing our robotics competition in preparation for the spring in addition to hosting some events for high schoolers to explore robotics in an interactive, hands-on experience. Through this DeCal, you can learn about the aspects of delivering/gaining support for STEM education and developing a robotics competition from the ground up.
No experience is required. PiE is meant to be a learning experience for you just as much as it is meant to be a learning experience for the high schools that we reach out to!
