British Parliamentary debate is a globally recognized academic debate format, featuring four teams of two persons that engage each other through a series of seven-minute speeches interspersed with questions. This course is intended serve as a hands-on introduction to the activity through in-class lectures, practice rounds, and video screenings.
Public speaking skills are honed through regular practice. There are no papers or exams, but attendance at every class is required. Classes will consist of brief lectures from experienced debaters on key aspects of the activity, followed by a practice round to implement a selected technique. Students can participate in the round by speaking on a team or judging on a panel. In addition, there will be at least three opportunities to participate in debate tournaments during the semester at local universities. Students must attend at least one.
