Anyone interested in research within Cognitive Science, Psychology, Neuroscience, Philosophy, Artificial Intelligence, Linguistics, or the Social Sciences is encouraged to take this class. BROCA is designed for students of all backgrounds and majors who want to understand how science - within the interdisciplinary field of Cognitive Science - is carried out.
The first class will include an overview of the course, a presentation about cognitive science as a field, and an introduction to research. In each week thereafter, students will be assigned a paper to read for the next class session. Each paper is selected by the guest speaker who will come to our class to engage in discussion with students about the work.
Students are responsible for reading the paper and responding to questions and prompts about the work via bCourses. Responses are checked by the facilitators and graded on completeness and thoughtfulness, not correctness.
Mid-way through the semester, students will be required to make an appointment with a professor (or grad student/post-doctoral fellow) of their choice and engage them in a short discussion about their research. Afterward, students will submit a summary of the discussion on bCourses.
Towards the end of the semester, students will be required to give a short presentation to the class on a Cognitive Science article of their choice. Students can work either alone or in small groups (2-3 people) for this project.
To pass this class you must complete a minimum of 9 assignments, attend a minimum of 9 out of 10 classes with a guest speaker, submit the midterm-project and give your final presentation.
