In this course, we will examine several social, political, and economic issues affecting India today; essentially, we will look at how India has changed in light of modern development. Our analysis will include the root causes and history of the question at hand. We will examine the issue as it plays out in modern-day life, emphasizing potential solutions and the individuals and organizations working to effect these changes. In particular, we will study caste, ethnic, and religious conflict; women's rights; poverty and rural development; and access to education, sanitation, healthcare, and infrastructure.
In addition to participation in class discussions, you will be expected to complete up to 10 pages of readings per week, a group project, a short take-home essay midterm, and a short take-home essay final. Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to earn extra credit by attending various film screenings, lectures, and other community events. Attendance is mandatory; excused absences are permitted with advance notice.
