Curious about Korean traditional drumming? Come and learn to play the Korean drums! No experience is necessary. Whether you have a sense of rhythm or not, we'll teach you everything you need to know!
This course is part two of the introductory course on the origins and practice of Korean drumming, P'ungmul. Students will be learning how to play the outdoor-based form of P'ungmul. You will not only learn how to play these Korean drums but also understand the social, political, and religious ideologies that shaped the P'ungmul's unique style of music, song and dance through biweekly readings. At the end of the semester, students will be performing the P'angut piece at the annual EGO Spring Showcase.
There are TWO total unexcused absences allowed. There are no exams, but we will have short weekly assignments and a few short papers.
Prerequisites:
No prior experience necessary! We will teach from the very basics and will provide the instruments. If you're simply interested in Korea's traditional musical culture, you're welcome to sign up for this course. In addition, you do not need to have taken the first part of the course from the previous semester!
