Do you want to develop quantitative and qualitative research skills? Would you like to learn how to use statistical software? Do you want to learn research skills that would open opportunities for graduate school and employment?
If you said YES! to any of these questions, then this course is for you!
In this course, we assume no prior knowledge and you will earn 3 units while becoming a student researcher! You will learn key statistical and data visualization competencies, research design, data collection, quantitative and qualitative data analysis skills, and strategies for reporting data. Through this course, you will learn how to identify and properly respond to possible ethical concerns that arise when conducting research.
You can work on a research project that relates to your passions. Your project may be related or unrelated to education. We approve most projects and you can also join one of our existing projects.
If you would like more information or a CCN, please email designforequitylab@gmail.com.
At the end of the semester, students will successfully complete a research project (i.e., a pilot study or research proposal) on a self-determined inquiry (with approval) or you can choose to participate in ongoing research on inclusive teaching practices in UC Berkeley classrooms. For instance, using randomized control trials, you could join the design for equity lab in studying how adaptive equity-oriented pedagogies and non-adaptive pedagogies impact student achievement, stereotype threat, psychosocial outcomes (e.g., motivation, sense of self efficacy, sense of belonging), academic trajectories, and persistence in higher education. Our goal is to identify effective teaching practices that benefit all students, especially those from low-income, underrepresented, and marginalized backgrounds. Opportunities to publish and present research at conferences will be available. Researchers can also apply for a consulting role where they can use research to consult instructors on improving teaching. More information will be provided in class and via email.
If you would like more information or a CCN, please email designforequitylab@gmail.com.
Attendance Policy: Students may only miss two (2) classes without penalty. We ask students to attend the first two days of class. This course will start on the week of September 10th.
